High school marching bands all over the country will be competing in field shows, parades and tournaments during the next few weeks.  The peak of their marching season is in November.  Bands vary in size and style with membership ranging from 60 to 400 students.  These teens have been practicing since late August putting in about 16 hours per week to perfect their music, their marching and their shows.

Now is a great time for families with younger children to inspire them to become members of a marching band.  Take them to one of the local tournaments, take them to a parade or even to the local football came on a night when the band will perform during half-time.  In fact, anytime you can get your kids in front of a live performer all the better.  Perhaps you know a neighbor who is involved who might let your child shadow them for the evening.  Or who might be willing to show off their instruments.  The large brass instruments are always a favorite.

Suggested Family Activities:

• Attend a high school band tournament in your area
• Watch a high school parade band tournament
• Watch a Drum Major Competition
• Watch an Auxilary Color Guard Competition
