There is no such thing as a perfect first car for a teenager.  Each individual is different, drives differently, and has been taught differently.  Of course,  teenagers always have different things in mind when looking for their first car.  They go for the looks, the sportiness, how it sounds, and how much room it has for all their friends.  On the other hand, the parent has all the safety features in mind to be able to transport their teenager and anyone else in the car safely at all times.  Some parents have even considered installing GPS units for their teens, with and without the teenager's knowledge.  This allows parents to observe their teen's driving habits without the teenager knowing.   Although somewhat sneaky, it can help build up a parent's confidence in their child's driving, as long as the teenager is not abusing the rules that the parent has clearly laid out.

When it comes to safety, bigger doesn't always mean better or safer.  Sometimes a bigger vehicle is harder to manipulate in heavy traffic and also harder to keep under control once in an accident situation.

The best place to check on a car's safety rating is through the insurance institute crash test results.  It gives you all the insight that is needed for making an informed decision on the type and style of car that is safest for all, driver and passengers included.  Hopefully, you and your teenager can come to an agreement that is acceptable to both.
