Camping with kids can be extremely fun and easy. The easier it is, the more fun for all. Get your kids involved in the planning from the very beginning - where to go, what to eat, what to pack, etc. Keep it fun and simple by planning ahead and pre-packaging most of your meals so you have time for fun with your family.
Keep the menu easy. The basics are always the best. Here are some suggestions. Kids love hot dogs, if you have small kids who you do not want near the fire handling sticks to cook their hot dog you can wrap the hot dog in tinfoil and have them color their buns with mustard or ketchup while you cook them. Canned beans, soups and stews are easy to put next to the fire to heat. Corn on the cob and potatoes are delicious wrapped in aluminum foil and placed directly in the campfire coals.
Entire pre-packaged vacuum-sealed meals are extremely easy to prepare. They can be heated in boiling water which also makes clean-up a breeze. Remember plenty of everyone's favorite snacks such as trail mix, jerky, cereal bars, string cheese, crackers, raw veggies, and don't forget the peanut butter and jelly. S'mores that are made with marshmallows, graham crackers and chocolate bars are always a favorite after dinner treat.
Make sure you bring along plenty of activities, discuss safety around camp and set boundaries, so kids know where they can and cannot go. Make plans to go on a walk to explore the surrounding sites, allowing kids to learn something new about the great outdoors. By all means relax, enjoy and have fun.
