Today’s world is so dominated by television that sometimes we forget that watching TV as a family often stifles communication, interaction and does not provide the ideal environment for family growth. So turn off the television once in a while! There are things to do as a family that both kids and parents can enjoy together. Depending on the age of the children, families should select activities that stimulate the mind and encourage conversation, creativity, curiosity and expression of ideas.
One of the easiest and most effective family activities is reading aloud. Reading to children gives them exposure to the world around them and stimulates their imaginations. Reading encourages independent thought. Afterward, talking about what was read promotes the free expression of ideas and increases the child’s inquisitiveness and interest in reading.
Family hobbies are another excellent way to promote togetherness and intellectual growth. Learning family history by constructing a family tree is one way to increase awareness of heritage and learn history at the same time. A stamp or coin collection educates parents and children alike about the world and the people in it.
Taking day trips to zoos or museums are tried and true methods of getting out of the house and into the wider world. A walk through a museum will kindle interest in history, nature, art, science or just about any subject imaginable. Conversations that arise from touring places of learning increase knowledge, free thought and expression of opinions and, as a shared experience, bring families closer together.
There is much more than television available to families in search of activities to share. Families need communication to develop healthy and strong relationships. So turn off the TV once in a while. Your family’s well-being depends on it.
