Teaching a Hard Work Ethic

It’s never too early to begin instilling a hard work ethic into children.  Teaching by example is the first step.  When children see the benefits of working hard, they will be more likely to put the same behavior into practice.

Parents should begin teaching work ethics at home.  Household chores are a great beginning.  Children can begin earning monetary compensation through performing chores as early as 1 1/2 years old.  As long as they can understand and follow directions, they can begin developing a productive work ethic.  However, parents must take caution not to pressure children, as it can have a negative effect on them and create a feeling of avoidance when it comes to work that can be detrimental to them in the future.

There are several ways children can transition from earning money at home to earning money from others.  Mowing lawns, babysitting, lemonade stands, and other odd jobs are great ways for kids to begin learning important life skills.  As this transition is made, however, take the time to make sure that your child is ready.  Children must understand and follow safety guidelines.  To better guarantee their well being make sure you, as parent,  are always aware of where they are and that they only accept "jobs" that keep them in public view.  Children should never work on any task in which they are alone with another individual in a secluded area.

As children begin reaping the benefits of their hard work, it is important to introduce productive money management techniques such as budgeting and saving.
