Teaching Your Teens Everyday Skills
We all know that in this modern world of ours, it is not an easy task to raise teens. However, while your teens are home for the summer, make the entire time a bit less stressful for everyone. Take the time to show them how to do things around the house, and make it fun and interesting for them.
For example, the chore for the day is to get the laundry done. Once the laundry is collected, show them how to separate it for colors and whites, but let them do the actual work. Have them adjust the proper settings on the washer and learn how to measure the detergent. Do the same when it’s time for switching to the dryer. Then show them how to fold or properly hang items when they are finished. In exchange for their efforts, they get to plan and prepare the meals for the next day. The main meal needs to include salad and dessert. Let the teens write up the menu, then let them figure out what items they need. After going through the cabinets, they need to write a list for the store. Give them a budget, take them to the grocery store, but let them shop for the items and learn their way around the store, as well as look for bargains.
The next day they have to prepare the meals. Let them read the recipes and learn how to make things, including how to use the burners and oven properly. Then let them set the table and serve the meal. At the end of the day, your teens have actually learned several “common sense” items that they will use forever, but they will also feel a sense of accomplishment!
